by Terry Straehley

Santa Barbara, CA USA

Went out today to take Butterfly pictures for the 2005 Edition. You can see one from the 2004 pictures in the Exhibition Gallery. It has been very gray with no sun here in "sunny" California this summer. I went out at 10 when the exhibit opened and the Butterflies were almost invisibile. As it warmed up a little, they started coming out. During the week is not the best time to go because there are groups from schools, preschools, etc., but I photographed for about an hour and a half before I had to leave. See www.sbnature.org if you are in the area and want to see the exhibit.

Jerry, everything about this image screams, "STUNNING!" The vibrant colors, details, and DOF are perfect. This is my favorite in the series.---Deb

Beautiful color and form here, Terry...the flower and the butterfly seem to be mirroring one another. Nice clarity and detail too...that eye is something special. The DOF in the background is very effective. Nice catch of "Julia" atop her flowery "throne"...delicate and regal. MFC

Remarkable, beautiful color -- it looks as if it's about to take flight. Great DoF too. I can't decide if it's color-coordinating with the flower, or clashing. ;^)

A lovely series, Terry. You captured the exquisite nature of these fragile beauties so well. It would be hard to choose a favorite. What I expecially like in this image is the curled proboscis mimicing the curled stamens(?) of the flower, and the detail in the eye. Very nice! Bev
