4th Place (tie)
Pathway Through the Past

by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

A typical pathway in Sampazari, the old, traditional and very conservative part of Turkey's capital city. The building on the left was reportedly the first U.S. Embassy in Ankara (now replaced by a somewhat newer building in a different part of town) in the 1940s. I've been coming to this part of town for the past nine years and never knew that until Saturday!

Very rich color and detail, Helen. Good composition for the challenge, too. Sure looks like these buildings have seen better days, though...

Let me simply add to what's already been said that the textural content of this is really rich. This is definitely another of those wonderful "Betts eye" images. John

The colors and lighting are great here...and the condition of the buildings gives the atmosphere and flavor to the pathway. Also a good choice to show a lower, wider perspective in the composition by including more pathway at the bottom of the frame so the depth of the path is accentuated.

Helen, I really like this scene...& I think you captured a lot of character here. Nice perspective, lighting, clarity, and color contrast. Nice photo. MFC

Helen, you have such a great eye! This image certainly captures the essence of the topic. As I look at the buildings, I can't help wondering how they remain standing. As always, I appreciate the background info that you usually give.---Deb

Thanks for your comments, everyone. There's a garden behind the wall that is pretty overgrown. I understand the municipality is going to do something with the building but don't know what. FWIW the H1 is no longer with me; it just wasn't a good fit! Helen

I agree with Bev. The build of those old walls are really interesting.

An interesting pathway, Helen. I would love to see what's behind those walls. You're getting great pictures from your H1! Bev
