flying slipper
by

This is a variety of paphiopedilum moquettianum also known as slipper orchid. The usual habit is that it flowers near the base of the stem and when it is spent the next flower that replaces it is further up the stem. This plant has been flowering like that for the past 6 months and what is shown here is the last flower on the very end of the stem.

Nice shot - I love the contrast with the high-key background!

Striking image of a delicate orchard. I also think the high key tone is perfect with this beauty. Linda L

Thanks Mike and Bev for your comments, it is much appreciated. Yes Bev, it should flower again in about 6 months. That is if I remember to fertilize after it flowers. I tend to torture my orchids through neglect but somehow they come through alright.

Nice presentation, kt. The high-key approach is perfect for this exotic beauty. Will you be able to get it to flower again? Bev

kt, I really like this...the odd form, the transparent colors, the stark white contrast. The way that little stem makes it's way to the base of the flower adds a lot to the simple composition too. Nice photo. MFC

Thank you Sonny and Helen for taking time to give your thoughtful comments. The highkey here was a bit of a risk but judging from your comments it was the right thing to do.

I like how you captured the transparency of the orchid against the high-key background. Also, it's quite effective the way it's simply suspended in the image. Very nice! Helen

kt, I like the high key effect and the overall presentation of this exotic flower. I also like how its stem provided a natural looking leading line to the bloom. A very attractive image.
