Tail Slapper
by Ann Chaikin

Frederick Sound, Alaska

This humpback whale was flipping his tail back and forth slapping the water. It is quite a sight to see. Nobody is sure why they do this though some theories are that they are sending signals to their buddies or they are just having a good time. We saw lots and lots of humpbacks in Alaska but this was the only tail slapper. I go for the "having fun" theory myself. It sure is fun to watch.

Great capture! I went out on a whale watching trip in Okinawa, but wasn't lucky enough to get something like this! Helen
