22-JAN-2005 Richard Rehkemper

5th(tie)
Backdoor off the lip by Richard Rehkemper

The Banzai Pipeline, Hawaii

A body boarder going the opposite direction than normal, only the brave try this. Taken with Sony 1.7X teleconverter and an old tripod with one leg stuck in the sand as a monopod (I find it too hard to track the action with a tripod).

Well-timed, Richard...great action capture. Nice composition and colors here too. The placement of that small surfer in all that wave action is really effective to view. MFC

That is one very cool shot. Perfect timing of the move and that wave! It'd take inside knowledge to capture this so I'm gathering you don't hesitate to get out there yourself. Great shot.

Wow, your right, I took a closer look at the board and I can see he is doing a move. Your comment that said going the opposite direction led me to believe he did not land this move :) Once again, awesome shot- Ryan (golfers2424)

Rick, the surfer and the wave could not have been framed in a better location, excellent!
I especially enjoy the water line that was created middle right side of the image... it draws my eye across the image in such a natural way, right to the surfer. Markjay

Ryan these aren't wipeout :) Us spongers do things like this and call them moves :) Great shots rich. How are you supporting the lens with the converter on there? Any probs related to that?

Both your shots are great, I like how you captured the moment in this shot. Wipouts make for some interesting shots! -Ryan (golfers2424)

Great action shot! You wouldn't catch me up there, that's for sure ;-)

Richard...WOW, what a capture. No only have you caught an amazing action image, your composition is truly remarkable. I love the way the crest pattern draws your eye along the wave to the body boarder being spat out the side. Very cool. David

Awesome surf action photo, Rick! I'm betting we'll be seeing some more of yours like this in the eligible gallery (wink!). You have the best "playground" in the world (and some of the best surf, too!) Aloha! ~Nee :)
