Anxiety Attack
by Helen Betts

Okinawa, Japan

This was taken at the bullfighting championships in Ishikawa City. This photograph brings back memories of the day I was almost killed by a bull that came close to scaling the low fence into my lap. I fainted when I saw this one-ton thing hovering over me, and some kind stranger pulled me to safety. For those who are interested, this is a short video from television of the attack -- you can actually see me being knocked down by the bull http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=4290172143&idx=1 (I think you have to download the video to view it) and a photo from the paper showing a similar incident that occurred the same day http://www.pbase.com/image/39150675.

Helen, I didn't know you had a brush with "death" like that...had to be quite an experience. I like how this man has the bull by the horn and nose...or does he? :) I like the expression on both of their faces. MFC

Helen, I love a photo that can be interpreted on multiple levels. As to who's having the anxiety, it could be you (given your previous experience with bulls), or the guy in the photo (hey, I've got a bull by the nose - what the heck am I doing), or the bull (what does this guy think he's doing - I've just had my horns sharpened).

Hi David,

Bullfighting in Japan is between two bulls; the first one to give up is the loser. Neither of them gets killed. That was what happened with the bull that almost killed me -- he just decided enough was enough and tried to leave -- through the spectators.

Helen, after watching the video, I can fully understand the title of this photo. This gentleman has an interesting hold on the bull. Bullfighting is something I would never have imagined them having in Japan. David
