A Lamp and Its Shadow

by Helen Betts

Istanbul, Turkey

Sunday was an absolutely miserable day in Istanbul, so we decided to revisit Aya Sofya, which unfortunately on that day was damp, cold and darker than usual. We finally had to return to our hotel after my feet lost all sense of feeling :-), but I did manage to get some pictures before that happened. Aya Sofiya is a magnificent structure that was built as a Byzantine church, then coverted into a mosque after the Ottomans conquered Constantinople and finally was designated a museum by the modern Republic of Turkey, a monument to both religions. This is an old lamp that was situated in front of a large Muslim marble facade. For those interested, there is a shot of the whole scene here http://www.pbase.com/image/38954801 and several more pictures of freezing Aya Sofya at the end of the same page.

Nice composition, Helen. The prominent shadow, the pillar's form and other vertical lines suit the theme admirably. - Mike

Nice shot - I really like the shadow. I like the picture of the whole scene, too - everything looks so much bigger in that shot than in this one.

Helen, I like the colors, lighting, and design details of this "cultural" setting...& I think it's enhanced by the bigger-than-life shadow. Nice composition/crop too. MFC

Helen, there's a lot of interest and detail in the photo. The prominent shadow is a good idea and a natural association.

Neat image, Helen. You perfectly captured the ambience in spite of freezing feet:)

Helen, I like your choice of shadow associate. I also like the rigidly vertical sense in the overall composition filled with ornate flowing details. A nice mix of simple structure and complex details. -Michael
