Inferno crater, Waimangu, New Zealand

Situated nearer to Rotorua than Waiotapu, the Waimangu Thermal Valley was created during the great eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886. Waimangu means black waters due to some black, muddy sources in the valley.

I was tempted to see how hot the water was, however as I got closer the solid land started to give way to mud. Now drowning in copper sulphate is not my thing, so gave up. The other hot spring lakes were like hot water from a tap.

I have three panaroma photo's of the Inferno crater but the software I am using to stitch it is not doing a good job (Auto-levels not working properly). Any suggestions?

Beautiful capture of that thermal pool Hassan. Gorgeous color. It reminds me of the thermal pools in Yellowstone (except for the more exotic greenery around the edges :)). Melanie

Hassan: What's remarkable about this image to me is the sense I get of being "pulled" to the center of the pond. All the peripheral features direct me there. Very unusual and very cool. Fremiet

Dear Mike,

This was the fastest way to see New Zealand, I was there on a work related assignment, however I managed to get one day (Sat) together with a German collegue to hire a car and head out into the country from Auckland. We had a map, marked out the places we wanted to go and spent 5-30minutes at each site. These craters were very beautiful, its a shame to lighting was very harsh from the top.

Heard of fast-food, I would called this fast-holiday. Otherwise i hope all is well with you. I am currently suffering from Jet Lag, sleep pattern is way out.

Dear Helen, Penelope,

The Crater complex was brought to life by the 1886 Tarawera eruption, this valley is the greenest and most natural of the thermal areas. It boasts the 'world's largest hot spring' and the delightfully blue Inferno Crater Lake. The blue colour is a result of copper Sulphate (I think). Hassan
