Deadly Metal
by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

This is an old Ottoman sword. I wish I had had time to use a tripod and get more DOF, but I shouldn't have been taking time out from work to do even this much :-). I hope it's OK, but I decided to switch the original view of the sword I had posted with this one after comments I received from several people, including my husband, who I think was a bit offended I didn't go with his favorite! This is the view that I had previously posted http://www.pbase.com/image/32311616. I liked the detail of the engraving (or whatever you call it) on the blade.

I agree about the diagonal positioning and good use of negative space to highlight the beautiful craftmanship in the sword. Elegantly beautiful and rich. - Simon Bennett.

Helen, I like the diagonal composition and background contrast. I think the DOF is effective for the length here. A unique/interesting sword. MFC

The DOF isn't too shallow for me at all. It just enhances the 3D feel of the image -Arn

Thanks for your comments, Arn. Actually, I was torn between the two pictures and which one to enter. My husband, my coworker (who also enters these challenges) and now you have all said they like the full view better, so perhaps I'll exchange them. I was just concerned about the lack of DOF that is even more evident in the full view (simply no time to set up a tripod for a better shot), even though I like the hilt and tip in the picture, which was what I had originally intended.

Very nice detail (I actually like the fuller view even more). Beautifully crafted sword. I was looking for something like this for the eligible gallery too, but couldn't find a suitable sword... -Arn
