Wonderful image, Melanie! The colors, perspective, and view work well together. I like the vertical compo because of the head on view of your friend.---Deb

Mlynn, This is just lovely. Great composition, wonderful colours and sky. Your “old friend” must be proud of such a nice portrait. :). Jesus (JesusV)

Beautiful image - really nice composition, and I love the clouds!

Very pretty image. The clouds really add a very interesting perspective and the horse in the field is very well placed in the frame. Nice perspective. This looks like an image from a brochure to promote tourism to the countryside ... it really makes you smell the grass and fresh air. Nice work Melanie.

Another example of your excellent compositional skills, Mlynn. Your shooting vantage point just adds to the "wide feeling" of the image. Ofcourse having a beautiful cloud formation in your image doesn't hurt it any either :-) Nice work. Markjay

I can almost detect the sweet fragrance of the meadow! I like the perspective and my eye is drawn up to the sky after I have explored the beautiful grass, horse and trees. Nicely composed. Meem

Thank you Helen and Mike, and thank you both for letting me know you prefer this version ;). Mike, she is 27 years old, and I first met her when she was just a yearling. Melanie

Beautiful colors, composition, and sky, Melanie...good detail throughout too. I also like this version best. Nice photo...how old is your friend? MFC

Perfect shot, Melanie. Beautifully composed, great sky, and I love the horse. Well done. FWIW I definitely like this one better than the horizontal view. Helen

Thank you everyone for your comments. Andy, I took several shots (some horizontal), and when I looked thru them after downloading, this was the first one to pop out at me and the first one I processed. I went vertical on some of the shots to try to emphasize the sky. After posting this one, I went thru the images again and found a horizontal one I also liked. You can see it >> here

Jerry, no I hadn't read the article, but thank you for posting a link in the forum-- I plan to read it later.

Wonderful shot! Has all the elements of a good wide angle shot... interesting foreground subject, good depth to the mountains, as well as intersting cloud formations and nice, rich colors. You must have read Moose Peterson's article "Picturing it Wide" ;-)

Melanie, I love the detail across this entire image...from the grasses to the clouds. With the position of your "old friend", your choice of a vertical composition really emphasizes the vertical lines in all the parts of this photo. The title is wonderful...I do have the feeling of old familiarity and adoration here. -Michael Puff

(*) did you try this shot in landscape orientation? i'm just curious how it would look. maybe there were some distracting elements which led you to the vertical orientation. just a question - i wouldn't change anything about this photo ;-) -- andy

everyone one of your montana shots makes me sooo jealous! this one is splendid. lovely colors, a dramatic sky, foreground you've got a cool equine, and the shot leads me waaaay into the distance to the mountains. nice nice work, melanie ;-) -- andy
