How Many Hands by Hassan Abba 9th May 2004

Sony F828 in Macro Mode, f8, 7 seconds. A very used 50 shilling note I picked up in Kenya, I kept it because it had the smell of Kenya - red soil and many hands. Hassan Abba

This keeps me coming back and wondering. I like it more and more each time. Such an interesting shot.

Interesting and well-composed shot. Very nice. Melanie (mlynn)

Good subject, Hassan. I like the entry image better -- the antiquey-looking background, the arrangement and the angle shot at. Helen

Thanks MFC, Rupak, Cheryl and Irish for your comments, I'll stick to the darker background as MFC pointed out for the more authentic feel of old money. Lets see how this goes down. Wonder if we could have credit-cards with donuts????

Hassan, I have a small collection of monies from the few places I've been...but none like this. The purpose of the openings in the coins is fascinating. I appreciate the blue background for "visual" reasons, but I agree that the darker background provides more of an authentic "feel" to the shot. MFC

Hassan and Irish-eye:
Remember, it takes money to make money. Specifically, there are the costs of the metal, minting, and distribution (weight) of the coins. If you were to work with less material, the costs of making money go down. This is the main reason that there were many antique "doughnut" coins. Ofcourse, people did make strands of the coins, too!
Rupak.

Hassan..While the one you just posted as an alternative possesses more clarity..Personally that is not the only quality I look for in work... I like your first decision of coloring for background better, tho' others may disagree. i find it adds to the wornness of the money more than the white. i have travelled in places where the money is so used it actually crumples in ones hand.. Interesting usage of the tying of money together..Neccesity being the mother of invention.. they needed the open center...A Decidely different idea for the challenge..irish_eye

Dear Irish,
My best guess is the hole used to give people the ability to tie together coins.
My other take on this same theme is

Let me know which one you prefer?
