The Blue Door
by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

Taken near the ancient citadel in the city's most traditional area. This door has always fascinated me, and I find I can never resist taking yet another picture of it. I took this linked photo (scanned) in 1996 with some of the house's occupants http://www.pbase.com/image/28787113. It seems a bit worse for wear in the intervening eight years. This is the rest of the house: http://www.pbase.com/image/25462626

A cohesive and complimenary mix of color and texture here, Helen...you captured the character of this engaging opening very well. MFC

Dear Helen, the Doors look like they are definietly pre Islamic Era (before 1400AD) of Turkey. Great shot. Hassan

Helen, you've managed to capture the 'character' of these doors so well - they're really intriguing! - and so is the folowing image. Both great finds. I have a gallery of doorways - most nothing special - but still find the subject fascinating. Love your work. Bev

Aww, I dunno about "worse for wear"... Whatever it's lost in paint it has more than gained in atmosphere. A splendid evocation of the past. BTW the street (?) number couldn't be more appropriate in the current climate: there's another "Number Ten" that's not alone in looking decidedly worse for wear right now ;-) - Regards, Mike

Thank you all for your comments. And Bottles, I'm not really sure how old the door is. The house (in one of the linked pics) looks much newer, or at least newly renovated. These doors, which open into a courtyard, and the structure they are set into, appear to be much older. This neighborhood is the oldest in Ankara, built around a citadel whose walls date from the seventh century A.D. I'll ask, and if I can get any idea on this I'll post it here later. Helen

Wow, what an interesting shot Helen! I love photos of old things such as rusty cars, barns, and buildings. Can't help wonder how old those doors must be...any idea? bottles

Such a wonderful set of doors..I can see why you are so intriqued ..So am I..The coloring is very harmonious with the mud like walls..So much so that this look is what everyone is trying to effect in their homes these days!!!Facinating as well, is what lies behind.. in the shallow depth...Very Cool# 10 Opening Helen, Well seen/ taken and perfectlycomposed.[always impressed when I see an address out there]..irish_eye
