Well I am having trouble too with this but LEARNING. I went to the net
and looked up a lot on this subject. Actually what I got from the net is
it is and always has been HIGHLY controversial as to what is and what isn't lol.
But this would be in MY BOOK and it is a SUPER GREAT SHOT! I love it!

Ann, I never thought you were trying to be unjustly critical.
I really do appreciate you comment and opinion on this. Thanks again, dave v

dave - I agree completely with this:
"The same with a snow storm, or to powerful flash,
it removes much of the color leaving only white."
I think this is what we should be trying to capture, without the b&w conversion.

I am struggling to grasp this subject, too, so that is why I am commenting on images - to talk myself into what it means. I am not trying to be unjustly critical.

Well Ann, we disagree on this one. I've noticed at night, while walking around, things
almost look b&w, except near a light. The same with a snow storm, or to powerful flash,
it removes much of the color leaving only white. So for me, I do really believe b&w
is the way to go. You are right about the contrast, and I think I missed the boat
with these two pictures. I've spent so must time trying to get some "pop" out of my
pictures, it hard to think in that way. Thanks for your comment. dave v

I disagree about b & w being the way all images should be. My understanding is that the subject and the background should barely be discernable from each other - high key is subject and background are both highlights and low key they are both shadowy.
In this image that is true of the background and the bulb, the shade and base of the lamp are contrasting.
Thats my understanding anyway.
I like the perspective you have used.

I think black and white is the way to go for all pictures in this challenge. The only reason I didn't go b&w is that the seams of the shade really pop out. I may try a few things with this yet. Stay tuned, and thanks for your comment. dave v

Unusual perspective... that's for sure! :-) Clever image title to match! I'm still trying to figure out if I wouldn't prefer seeing this as a B & W ? Markjay
