Divine Texture
by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

I am entering this at the urging of a good photo friend. This is Aslanhane Camii, or Mosque, in Ankara's old district of Samanpazari, built around 1875 according to the sign and one of the oldest in the city. I've never been inside, but a friend and I decided to bring our headscarves some Saturday when we are spending the day up in that area. I imagine that in its earlier days, the entire front section used to be covered in tiles, but unfortunately only a few remain today. The minaret is here: http://www.pbase.com/image/22952394/medium

Hi Bev, thank you. I've taken pictures inside mosques in touristy areas, such as at Sultanahmet (the Blue Mosque) in Istanbul, but I'm not sure I would have the nerve to do that here. (I won't even wear shorts to this part of town in the heat of summer :-)) While this part of Ankara is popular with tourists and the foreigners who live here (mainly because of its carpet, copper and antique dealers), it's really one of the most conservative and traditional parts of the city. I think we'll generate sufficient "interest" by merely going in, so trying to take pictures would be a bit much. Helen

A wonderful image, Helen. Every time I look at it I see more details and textures. Will you be able to take your camera inside? Bev

Really nice textural detail and lighting, Helen. I esp like the sense of mystery here with the visitor in the dark doorway...nice color contrast with the blue tiles. Nice shot. MFC

The brick and stone textures, just visible blue adornments, and low sun really invite you into the photo and the doorway. It has a marvelous "you are there" quality. Super! ... R. J. (Imager)
