And the Music Goes Round and Round* by Kerry Pierce

Detroit, MI

This image was recorded using a manual 2nd curtain flash technique. Ambient light was from 2 tungsten lamps. The flash was a Quantaray slave triggered manually by pressing the test button on the back of the unit while the CD Walkman was rotating on the turntable. The flash was triggered by best guestimate of the end of the exposure.

Neat technique - I love how the cd player is ghostly, but still sharp!

Very very cool- the thumbnail doesn't do it justice. I appreciate you taking the time to go into detail about how you did this (I'm going to have to research "2nd curtain"). If you have the time, it would be neat to see some of those extra photos you mentioned. --Nancy/JoseNoway

Thanks for adding your thoughts about composition choice here, Kerry...it adds to my appreciation of this shot. MFC

Thanks, MFC! As you can imagine, manual 2nd curtain is rather hit or miss... :-) I've got some more images from that session. Perhaps I'll upload another. The problem with a macro type was the lighting. The short distances involved, thus shorter shutter speeds, lose the motion blur. I wanted an above, off-center angle, to show the turntable, which contrasts the technology as well as the movement. :-)

Really an interesting technique, Kerry...and a neat effect. I esp like how the Sony player has a "ghostly" presence on top of the turntable. I like the lighting and color tones alot too. Good idea and a nice photo. MFC

(*) I'd just enjoy playing with this technique, trying different crops & closer distances...maybe even try getting a more abstract/macro shot where the background to the "ghostly" Sony player is "all" spinning turntable. Nice shot. MFC
