I love the colors and light in this work. Skillfully composed and interesting subject against a good background. - Ivo (professor-pi)

Arvin, you did a beautiful job here. Quiet, simple, poetic. Haiku.

Take a look at my photograph "Explanation" for explicit instructions regarding reading this musical notation.

Anybody notice that one of the pieces here is Auld Lang Syne? Now that's amazing. How does this music depict that song? Arvin is planning to take another picture of the music to show how to read it. He'll post that soon I hope. Ann C

Absolutely fascinating Arvin. Fremiet

I'm going to jump in and comment... ;) Yes, this is music notation for the shakuhachi. Arvin knows a bit about how to read this and for this I admire him greatly. We both know how to read western musical notation but to me this looks like Greek... well, actually Japanese musical notation. :) Ann C

Nice-looking wood flute, and I like the musical notation. I took a year of Japanese a long time ago, and this writing didn't look like anything I recognized (too many of the same characters in a row, and too many little ticks), so I searched the web - apparently this is musical notation.

Nice composition, Arvin. Is this sheet music for shakuhachi? The characters don't seem to make any sense to me as words. (But then my Japanese is rusty, anyway, so who knows.) Helen

This is my instrument, and I do have problems trying to get a proper tone from it.

Nice composition and lighting, Arvin. I esp like the folded music sheet graphic, the quality of the flute, and your choice of background material. I casually play Native American & Shakuhachi flutes almost every day...the latter is harder for me to play :) Is this your flute? Nice photo. MFC

(*) Arvin, I'd just enjoy trying to find the perfect border line (or thin frame) for this...maybe something bamboo-textured, maybe just a thin black, white, or golden-brown line. I'd just experiment and compare results. Nice photo. MFC

ann, can you pretend to be my wife nancy *just once* for comments? i'm jealous that arvin get's to be called "hon" when you comment ;> -- andy

This is great Hon. I really like the way you juxtaposed the shakuhachie and the music for it in this image. Haiku indeed! Ann
