Violin Echoes *
by mlynn

The back only of an old Vuillaume violin, found many years ago in the burnt out remains of an old Montana homestead (I think).
The paper label (albeit a bit wrinkled) is still mostly attached to the 'inside'.

This work captures the attention because it makes you wonder about the history of the violin; who played it, was it abandoned, or couldn't it be safed from the fire? It is very well captured in this shot. I also like the choice for background, because the wooden grain really complements the subject.

I've looked at this photo over an over again-- the thumbnail sucks me right in, because it looks for all the world like a violin-shaped magnifying glass, magnifying the wood below it. Every time I see it, I have to click to see the full version to verify that it really is two pieces of wood. I'm always happy to see the full version, too. It's just beautiful. --Nancy (JoseNoway)

Neat idea Melanie. I love the way the grains of the wood radiate out from the violin back. Beautiful. Ann C

Thank you all. Mike, I didn't find this. My dad found it many years ago (I'm not sure where), and gave it to me a few years ago. And Luben, you're right. I was sort of rushing around, grabbing some shots while the sun was just so...and didn't think to set up the tripod (I'm always kind of awkward using the tripod); so this isn't as sharp as it could be. Melanie, I like your angled composition here...and the similar, repeating pattern seen in both pieces. The color is attractive too, esp with the slight burn on the violin...nice idea and photo. Where did you find this? MFC

(*) I like this "as is"...maybe could try a very simple, thin, white or black border line just to set it off slightly more against the gallery page color. That's all I could think of :) MFC

I agree, the monochromatic nature of this image is great, because it forces us to look at the gorgeous textures. I guess you did not have a tripod and as such had to shoot at F2 to enable handheld shooting. This is a shame, since some of the scene appears to be going out of depth of field. A brilliant shot nonetheless!!!

I love the overall monochrome look of this entry, and the composition is really good, the radial swirls in both the wood and the background go together so well. (steward84)
