This one still isn't quite what I wanted, as I still don't have my indoor technique figured out yet ;).
I'll probably keep trying to improve on the lighting and whatnot.
Revised 12/11: I reshot the Edison, but still wasn't completely happy with the results.
I managed to get more detail out of a different record, and out of the Edison logo; but as for the brass bits (although probably sharper and more true to life today), I think I prefer the moodier tones of the original pic.
So I cobbled bits and pieces of the different pictures together.
Maybe the record label is too prominent now...I dunno.
I'll probably try to shoot it again tomorrow, and change the lighting yet again.

I think it is a great shot Melanie. The warm tones and good dynamic range make for a very interesting image. And the framing is great too. If I was to be ultra-critical, I would have prefered to have the Edison logo in focus and the highlight on the arm looks a little blown out on my monitor. A little dodging should do the trick though.

melanie - i love the composition and idea here. agree with mike on the lighting tip. also, take a look at the sticks and stones challenge - i shot a rolling stones vinyl record in that one - i think mike is suggesting a way to maybe make a catch light on the record...i did it with a tiny mag light (small flashlight).

Nice "old" mood created here, Melanie...nice subject tones & lighting. I really like the way you composed this too and blurred "Edison" a bit in the background...gives a sense of depth. Good idea for a nice photo. MFC

(*) I'd maybe try to pick up just a little more light and sense of textural detail on the record itself. Possibly just using a flash light from one side (or other focal source of light). Nice photo. MFC
