Ottoman Detail
by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

This is a medallion dated 1268 according to the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, or 1853 according to the Gregorian calendar, during the reign of the Ottoman sultan, Abdülmecit. It would have been given to dignitaries to be worn on a sash or belt; this one was for the Crimean War. The gold center bears the tugra, or mark, of the sultan, while the outside is ringed with the star and crescent moon, which still appear on today's Turkish flag. It's sitting on an Ottoman table cover that is embroidered in gold.

Helen, I really like the lighting & color contrasts here. Interesting subject with clear detail...I esp like how the silver piece radiates from the central golden sphere. Informative caption too. Nice shot. MFC

Yes, you're right, Yehuda. and thank you. I used to be able to read these numbers without thinking, but obviously not any longer! I'll change my explanation. Helen

Isn't it saying 1268? Yehuda
