Lizard Rods
by johnebones

The Ilizarov frame is a bone fixation device made up of rings, rods, and wires.
Used by Orthopaedic Surgeons to lengthen and straighten the extremities.

Patients often call their 'Ilizarov' frame 'lizard rods'.

Wow, like some kind of sci-fi special effects shot. Great job - Shay

I don't know why Jonesbones but, your image reminds me of the work of MC Escher :-)
The colors and structures are fascinating and, that lizard has GOT to be in serious pain here. OMG,
I just noticed your next image has the name Escher in it. LOL We think alike! Mark J

Thanks Bev and Eric. Actually, 'Lizard Rods' comes from the rod/ring structure of the fixator and from patients mispronouncing 'Lizarov's name. My partner gives Ilizarov lectures, so I built this frame out of surplus (used) parts and gave it to him on his 50th birthday to use as a teaching aid. Ha. -johnebones

I like both these shots for slightly different reasons. I like this version for the color and lighting, while I like the other version (vertical) for its escher-like character, which you've done very well. The extra body segment seems to belong there perfectly naturally (which of course it doesn't). Did the "liz" in the frame name suggest the work to you? Eric Hatch

Had no idea this challenge was going to be so educational! lol. Love your circles - and explanation. Bev

It's not supposed to be a torture device, but my patients who've worn the thing for a year or so may disagree. The Ilizarov frame can increase leg (and arm) length in people of short stature. It can also be used to transport segments of bone (or lizard) within the extremity to fill defects caused by trauma/infection/tumor. -johnebones

I like this version better than the one that was posted yesterday. This is really a different idea. Are you a doctor? What kind of problem would this torture be the cure for?

Thanks MFC. The original version was a bit overcooked, so I removed the photoshop effects. Now it looks about as realistic as a segmented plastic lizard in a metal frame can look. -johnebones

johnebones, I see you changed the background...I like it this way too. MFC

Very unusual, johnebones. I'm glad your caption explained what I was looking at :) I think the colorful lizard and device pattern are effectively set against the black background. Really a unique idea & photo. MFC
