Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge RR

What's neat about this picture is that I was actually ON the train when I took it! Those mountain curves are very tight, and you could routinely see the head of the snake from somewhere near its tail. June 2000.

The railroad was built to carry miners, mining supplies, and ore from Silverton, Colorado, to Durango. It rises about 5,000 feet in 11 miles (if memory serves), and is precariously perched on the clifs overlooking the Animas River. The RR has been used in many movies, including How the West Was Won and Around the World in 80 Days.

I took a whole batch of these when we were out there two years ago, and some were really good -- worth saving for anothe rChallenge! ERichocinc.

Very nice photo, great colors. And an interesting story to it. Where is this railroad?
