Chance Moments*

by Mike Ezell

I teach statistics. I really enjoy the challenge of teaching the logic of statistical reasoning, which at its core is about ruling out the possibility of chance processes. I had all of my new dice out for packaging in my student packets, and thought this might make a interesting picture.

I have asked for critiques because I wanted to hear opinions regarding the DOF in the image. I really wanted the focus to be directed to the text of "Chance" so I used a shallow DOF. Does it work, or is it distracting to have this shallow DOF?

Great shot, Mike! Pretty creative... for a statistitian. LOL Regarding your goal for the image: you certainly increased the chances (he he) that your viewer would focus in on the Chance text. By boxing it in with the dice, you created a chance border :-) Mark J

Very clever and original idea! And nicely photographed. It is revealing and mysterious. Lisafx

Wow - that is an awesome pic! I don't think there is anything I can add to what's already been said, certainly nothing I can think of to improve it. I can, however, see that for sale as a large format print. No question, it's sellable. Failing that, can I have a copy to print for my office? :-) (I work for a casino - it'd fit right in!) -Rich

Mike - your title, image, and explanation all work together, amd your choice for DOF complements the idea. Neat picture - I really like it. Bev

Great Shot Mike, very well composed and I like the angle you shot this from. Regarding the DOF, it works well by drawing the eye to the word Chance but I can't help wondering how this photo would be if the focal plane were adjusted so that the question mark and the word chance were sharp and the die behind blurred. Just my two bits............ Vikas !

Ann said it all for me ;). The DOF leads my eye directly to the text at the top of the question mark. I get the feeling of 'depth' with this as well - could be the shadowplay. I like how you've represented Chance at the dark end of many probables. Almost as if you were giving the viewer hope. Have you read The Diceman? - Simon Bennett.

Works perfectly for me Mike. Draws the eye right into the word "chance" and really gets the point across. Cool idea and a very interesting way to express what you do. I like it very much. Ann C

Mike, my "dead on" comment had to do with having nailed the concept. I hadn't seen your second line asking about DOF. Others will have more expertise on this score, but I know that my eye went straight to the top of the question mark and the word "Chance." I hadn't even noticed the DOF, so it must be working. --Nancy

I've always wanted to know how to type the sound of an indrawn breath-- never more than today. I guess I'll have to be satisfied with the outgoing "ooooooohhhhhh...." You've nailed it, Mike. Dead on. --Nancy/JoseNoway

Great image in and of itself, and nice view into who you are. JoeSchmoe
