This is mount Etna on the island Sicily (Italy), a very active vulcano.
On October 2002 the flanks broke open and the lava flow covered a holiday resort, blocked roads etc.
I saw this scene while driving on the motorway back to the my holiday home.
We stopped at a gas station and I took the picture from there, only to find out I was standing with my feet in an ants nest.
