Leaves!*

An alley in Bellingham

Yes, they are leaves, not flowers. Don't have a clue what they are though.

Hello, marvellous photo! I thought I'd float a suggestion.. It may be a Pieris. It's a fully hardy plant and its interest lies in its foliage. Young leaves in the most common Pieris are red or deep pink and mature leaves are green, which seems to match your description (also, there are no flowers, but in spring the plant is topped with what appear to be white berries). If the plant is growing wild in the alley, you could take a cutting, pop it into the ground and put a largish stone on top so the cutting protrodues from beneath it. This will protect it from frost and drought. If it isn't a Pieris, apologies for leading you up the wrong path!

Beautifully composed, Ann, and a very delicate image. They definitely look like poinsettias, but I've never seen ones in this color before. Helen

The soft colors in combo with the petal shape/arrangement really works well. Fremiet

In an alley?! What a great find. Very beautiful, Ann. Bev

Nice. Colors, textures, mix of highlights and shadows. Generally: Comforting to view. I am amazed that you got this level of DOF at f2.0. Idea for you: Between this and your "Spring Green" from Challenge 40, you have a nice pair. Add two more of the same genre (repeating plant patterns), and I think you'd have an exceptional group (matted, framed) for a kitchen wall. Nicely done. Joe Reilly

Thanks for the comments. These are growing on a bush in an alley near here. They aren't poinsettas I am sure as those would not survive here. They are some kind of a shrub. There are also red leaves and green leaves on this plant.

Ann, I like the subdued color of these leaves...also, nicely composed with a contrasting darker background that helps "bring out" some central structural detail in the plants. I like it. MFC

Nice image, Ann. I'll vote for variety of Poinsettas also ;-) I think the image could lose the inner pink frame line IMO. Try it and see if it changes anything for you visually? Have a nice day! Mark J

I agree with Jamie, I think these look like a variety of poinsettias. It is certainly a great picture, whether they are poinsettias or not :-). Lisafx

They look a lot like those "flowers" everyone buys around Christmas... I feel stupid because I'm blanking on the name. Anyway... they usually come in red but are also available in white, pink, and yellow. I really like this picture; I think it could be even better with a little more lighting, but that's just my opinion. Very nice composition. 8)
