We came across this woman tending her garden in the tacit farming area at Torii Station in the Yomitan Peninsula late in the afternoon. (Tacit farming is a situation in which the U.S. military allows local Okinawans to farm on base land.) I asked if I could take her picture, and at first she said, "Hazukashii" (I'm too embarassed), but we started talking, and soon she was posing for me with her vegetables. By the time we left around an hour later, we had armfuls of fresh carrots, tomatoes, celery, parsley, lettuce and fennel that she harvested while we talked. She obviously loves her garden and is very proud of it, and comes out every weekend to work in it. The vegetables were delicious, by the way.
