The ball was hanging on a very thin black string, which went up to the ceiling and then down to my other hand, so I could move the ball up and down by pulling and releasing the string.

I made the ball hang motionless first, some 30 cm above the bat.

I used a shutterspeed of 4 seconds and F8, with just normal (or a bit low) room light and self-timer to release the shutter.

The first second I left the ball hanging motionless to get a sharp defined ball.

During the remaining 3 seconds I releases the string slowly, moving the ball down, and then pulled the string, moving the ball up and outside the frame, which gave the stripe of movement.

So the movement is exactly the opposite of what is suggested in the picture and the sharp ball you see is the 1 second stationary ball at the start.

Thanks for guessing.

Willem

Howcheng, you are close, but not correct yet. I posted the question at dpreview as well, so I'll wait a bit longer with the answer. Willem

OK, I get it. You left the shutter open for a while, bounced the ball up and down, and then held it in a fixed position at the end. Very clever! --howcheng

No, it is one ball only. I'll give you a hint : put your mind in reverse. Willem

It's got to be two balls. One which is affixed to the background, and a second one that you're bouncing. Have I discovered your secret yet? :) --howcheng

Great pic! Hmmm... Fiddling w/ levels, I see a clue or two about how it was done, but don't know how to interpret them just off... I see a string, but not where one might expect... Hmmm... can't suss it out at the moment. -- W R (Bill) Somsky

Close, howcheng. Now how did I get the ball sharp and still the line of movement ? Willem

I would have to guess that since the hand and paddle are pretty still, you put the ball on a string and bounced it up and down. How'd I do? --howcheng
