Another ¥100 Down the Drain
by Helen Betts

Okinawa, Japan

This was taken at the game center of The Busena Terrace resort hotel in northern Okinawa. The place was empty except for my husband and myself, plus a machine attendant who didn't seem to care that I was taking lots of pictures. My husband bought some tokens and played the machines for me while I braced myself and snapped away. The place was brilliantly lit, and I managed to handhold without shaking the camera too much. We didn't win anything, but I finally got the picture I wanted.

Excellent lighting Helen! I also think the dark background, without a frame, adds to the image by emphasizing the form of the machine. Nice work! Roberta F.

As I mentioned above, this was taken at a game center where anybody can play. The slot machines were marked "25 cents," but I think you could only put tokens in (although they were the same size as quarters, so who knows). You win tokens, which can be used for other games, or probably some kind of prize like stuffed animals. But in general, nobody seems to care if I take pictures at places like this, which I gather is somewhat different from the States. Helen

I guess in Japan the casino operators don't care if you take pictures. --howcheng

You did a nice job of photographing this Helen. My question has to be... how in the world did you get away with photographing this without being whisked away by some secrurity guard, besides not using your flash? :-)
