thanks for all the nice comments, it means a lot to me.

for koo...thanks for you intrest. i hope you will post your creation on stf if you don't complete it in time for the challenge.

i had a selection of slightly iridecent small marbles and a special blue "art piece" with gold plating as a mini-globe. a little bigger than a nickel. a black knit shirt was put down on the table and formed to make a small depression raised on the sides and rear. the small marbles made the bottom layer. the globe was placed on top with one base marble in front, 2 on either side and the rest to the rear. a halogen desk lamp over head for lighting and some white paper to the left front to reflect some illumination on to florida. camera in macro mode, apature priority, -0.7 ev. i got in as close as i could and still have room for the reflecting paper. after, i cropped the picture to keep the front marbles in view so it looked like the earth was floating on top of bubbles. the top crop edge removed any shirt that showed. the sides to be evenly spaced. then resized to 500 wide and unsharp mask applied.

I've been trying to take a shot similar to this, and was not successful! This is very nicely done, can you share how you did it? Koo

I love the colored glints off of the marbles in the background, sort of like Christmas lights or something :) SarahD

Nice lighting in the sphere. I also like all the solid balls in the background contrasting with the transluscent one. Helen

I like this very much. I like all the reflections going on and the placement of the "planet" is just right. Very well done. The title fits just right too. :) -faye

I like spherical subjects. The light play and smooth line really appeal to my eye. I think you have done a great job and have chosen a wonderful title. ScarBoro
