Shutter.....
love images like this. People think they know what they are looking at. The eyes tell them it's crystal, the mind tells them it's crystal, and then you blow them away...... it's ICE! Very cool. :-) I salute you.

thanks dbg and sarge,

Sarge, this is an icicle, although kind of hard to tell in this shot. Its maybe 2 inches wide, at the most. The stem is about a cm. These icicles formed underneatht the ice of a little creek that I frequent. The current had kind of carved out the ice and left these dangling. This first link is to another one that gives you a better idea of the environment, you can see the water just a couple inches below.

This is beautiful! How did you do that? Is it an icicle? Very, very cool image.

Kafrifelle, To get rid of the background, which was already dark, I just adjusted the levels, curves, and contrasts in PaintShop Pro. This made almost all of the background dark except for a couple distractions that I just cloned out. If you look at the original version you can still see some bubbles moving in the water and some icycles.

Jimmy, I've taken a lot of icicle photos this year, as we've had little snow and its really dirty for landscapes. You probably saw a different one as this was just taken just a few days ago. Need to clarify because if it was taken a couple weeks ago then it wouldn't be eligible for the challenge.

Everyone else, thank you so much for your comments! Jim

I saw this one a couple of weeks ago, so I had to comment on it! Absolutely perfect shot; makes me miss the snow, almost.

Not only did you do a fantastic job with this image, but from reading your posts in the STF forum I know how difficult a shot this was to pull off... now it's not just fantastic, it's incredible! I'm in awe of your dedication to great imaging. ScarBoro

So crisp I thought it was a crystal vase upside down from the thumbnail! Lovely. Helen
