The Dividing Line
by Helen Betts

Nicosia (Lefkosa), Cyprus

Well, there are fences and walls in this image, but the entire scene is a wall between northern and southern Cyprus, called the Green Line. It's not the prettiest of pictures, but it took a lot of time to capture both the Greek and Republic of Cyprus (not recognized by Turkey) flags, along with the Turkish and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (recognized only by Turkey) flags visible in the image.

Hi Helen. I reckon you set yourself a very serious goal and by doing so, faced a formidable challenge of composition. I see the dense detail and arrangement of elements and am appreciative of how you 'solved' them as you scored your goal without compromising a toughly achieved stuctural integrity of the general picture. I can't just say 'well done'. I have to say Thank you for the lesson, Helen.

Thanks both of you for your comments. And I agree with you, Justin; I believe it's the last divided capital in the world. Talks for reconciliation are currently going on between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots, but I think they have a very long way to go.

Nice capture - and one of the more ominous meanings and uses for walls and fences - both in use here. Sad to see such a small place still divided after all this time, while a surprising number of people in the world are unaware of such a border. The perspective really illustrates the conflict and enmity.

Great capture of the flags from both sides of the wall - nice history lesson, too!
