The beautiful French countryside flashes by our window: whole villages hove into view and disappear in a matter of seconds. The ride is smooth and quiet, punctuated every few minutes by the sudden pressure wave of another TGV whooshing past in the opposite direction. I try and gauge the length of time we're alongside in the pass: it's a little over one second---and a train is something like 200 meters long.
