Just along the hillside south of the basilica lie two excavated Roman amphitheaters. They've been partially rebuilt--the larger holds about 10,000 people--and are now used for summer theater productions and music concerts. On another occasion I was here in the early morning when there was a group of actors in full Roman legionnaire kit, parading around the grounds in front of TV cameras.
Look carefully to the left of the stage: there are two black oblong openings in the hillside. These are viewing windows allowing visitors inside the underground antiquities museum next door to see into the amphitheaters.
