I tried to remove the captive nuts with a cold chisel. Removing one of the small nuts was a struggle!
Hit on the idea of screwing in the bolt and hitting with the lead hammer.
Worked like a charm for the remaining 5 nuts - even the stripped one!

Just behind the hammer, the brazing is visible from one of the nuts which had evidently come loose for a previous owner.
