Farewell to Colonsay. I saved this one for last, as it was the last photo I took of Colonsay,
from the ferry as it was leaving on a grey, misty evening. Not a great photo by any means,
and at first glance, it may look bleak, cold, unwelcoming even, but it couldn't be further
from the truth. This is Scalasaig, the main 'village' (population about 60?), and shows the
majority of the island's most important buildings. In the centre (illuminated) is the
Village Hall where the music festival and ceilidhs took place. Left of that, the modern
building, is the brewery, and right, partially hidden, is the shop/post office. Leaving,
just as another great night at the music festival was about to begin, left me with a heavy
heart; the magic of the island and its residents had left its mark. If you've ever seen
the film 'Local Hero', where a hard-nosed oil man, who had come from Houston to Scotland
to do a deal to buy out a village for develpment for a new oil refinery, but left with
nothing but a pocket full of shells and fond memories of wonderful scenery and friendly
locals, then I can confirm that this is what Scotland can do for you.
