Devils and angels argue over the soul of the woman.
Why did Uccello paint these images? I often ask. The story is appalling to the sensibilities of a post holocaust generation. It is a painting from a different mindset from today. I like to think that Present day artists would not be party to such propoganda - but I know that we have and we would. Despite his recognition by artists and galleries today Uccello died in poverty. Is this a clue as to why he painted this work? Could he have just treated it as an exercise in the painting of perspective.
