As we approached, a group of walruses plounged into the water
A group of inexperienced young males
... and mature male surveilling
... rising and showing his tusks
The group eventually came in between the Zodiak-boats
Curious joung males came closer to investigate.
Incidents of walrus perforating Zodiak-like pontoons have been reported - easily done with their tusks.
However walruses are peaceful and curious.
It is a known hunting strategy to pretend uninterested, after a while get up and walk away in another direction, ...
... only to sneak up on its contemplated prey from this new direction and attack when close enough.
When we approached shore the bear laid down and pretended to sleep ...
... showing disappointment when realizing we were not going ashore
