Martin Stretton's crash

The car is an ISO Bizzarini A3C - number 201 and the first one built. Martin just went straight on at Madgwick corner for some reason. He suffered a broken elbow and is already home recovering.

I am the marhsal in the hat that can be seen jumping down from the barrier and then my hand raised calling for rescue crew (kinda obvious but training is trainig and there are procedures) from Martin leaving the tack and me getting there was 11 seconds for the fire to be out and rescue crew summonsed 17 seconds, 43 seconds later rescue crew were there. After that time doesn't matter, Martin was in very very good hands, we could have dragged him out of the car in seconds and do untold damage to him, instead the car is peeled off around him while he is stabalised making sure that not other damage is done to the driver, at this point the car is metal the man is what counts. Hopefully I will meet Mr Stretton in the pits at somepoint, as he scared the hell out of me that day. First time I have ever thought I was running to a corpse.

As one of the rescue crew attending this incident, speed was not essential for the injuries sustained, a job takes as long as it takes & as another poster said this angle does not do justice to the severity of the impact & damage to the car, it was like trying to get a sack of potatoes through a letterbox.

Yet another historic racer destroyed - it will be rebuilt but will not be original.
Sorry Martin got hurt but I hope it sends a message to the "fast guys" to back off a little and remember the nature of the cars they have been entrusted with.

Hi Martin,
Good to hear you are home and making a good recovery. I was standing right in front of where your ISO finished up. The marshalls and medics did a fantastic job, allthough it seemed ages before they got you out. you hit the bank so hard I thought the car was coming into the crowd. There seems so much damage to the Bizzarini, can it be repaired?
The main thing is that you are O.K.
We are now off for a long weekend in our old 356 Porsche down to Angouleme in France to watch all the Bugattis etc race around the town.

I was at the race and the phot's do not do justice as to just how horrific this crash
was in person. I cannot belive how long it took the crew to remove the driver from the wreck. The safety crews need to work on the speed to remove a injured drive out of the vehicle.
