Dijmphna-expeditionen 1882-83

In 1882 the steamship "Dijmphna" set off from Denmark to explore the Arctic region north of Russia with a view to gain better knowledge about the Arctic flora and fauna and check theories of unchartered land north of Cap Chelyuskin at 78N/104E, which may ease the way to the North Pole.
In the Kara Sea "Dijmphna" encountered another ship, the Dutch steamer "Varna", which was stuck in pack ice. In an attempt to help "Dijmphna" got stuck itself and had to endure a long Arctic winter. Where "Varna" eventually got crushed by the torosses, "Dijmpna" managed to get free of the ice the next summer.
One of our great-grandfathers participated in the "Dijmphna" expedition as botanist and medical doctor - and the expedition's photographer.
Taking images at minus 40 degrees Celcius ( = minus 40 degrees Farenheit) wasn't that easy, he wrote...

Til Dijmphna ekspeditionen udlånte Meteorologisk Institut magnetisk instrumenter, som vi har endnu. Jeg ønsker at skrive en aktikel til "Vejret", medlemsblad for Meteorologisk selskab om Dijmphna ekspeditionen, de magnetiske instrumenter og de meteorologiske resultater. Til artiklen vil jeg gerne anvende 3 stk af de viste fotos på web siden.
