The EDIS adapter was intended to hold and secure a lightweight alloy gear. The shoulder that that alloy gear sits on is adequate for the alloy gear; but is rather narrow for a heavier gear.

This pic shows how narrow that shoulder is: the outer edge of the bottom of the ring retainer is the same size as the shoulder of the EDIS adapter.

A way had to be found to accomplish the mission with what is there.
