I was blessed to be able to accompany some friends of mine to Europe for a Mediterranean cruise in September 2009. The weather was beautiful and we went to many ports along the 12 day trip. This gallery highlights our time in Mykonos, Greece.
I think I enjoyed this port the most of any of them. The beginning of the day was spent on Delos, a small uninhabited island close to Mykonos, known for its important archaeological sites. It was amazing to walk through these ruins and explore actual houses with mosaic floors still in place or see tables where they would have eaten. A large city of about 30,000 inhabitants grew up around the sanctuary of Apollo in the Hellenistic period on this island so there are lots of ruins to explore. We spent the afternoon on Mykonos, which is a classic Greek island and a popular tourist destination with its white washed buildings with vibrantly colored roofs. The food was great, and the scenery was beautiful. I could have spent several days exploring the area.
