Cedar Breaks National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located in Utah near Cedar City. Cedar Breaks is a natural amphitheater, stretching across 3 miles, with a depth of over 2,000 feet. The elevation of the rim of the amphitheater is over 10,000 feet above sea level. The eroded rock of the amphitheater is more eroded than, but otherwise similar to formations at Bryce Canyon National Park. Because of its elevation, snow often makes parts of the park inaccessible to vehicles from October through May.
Near Cedar City is a collection of petroglyphs located at Parowan Gap. The Parowan Gap Petroglyphs are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and wildly recognized as a superb gallery of Native American rock art. There is an estimated 1000 year accumulation of artwork adorning the smooth canyon walls.
I had the pleasure of visiting both Cedar Breaks National Monument and Parowan Gap in August of 2014. This gallery highlights photos from that trip. Both of these locations are not on the typical Utah sight seeing tour - unlike Zion or Bryce Canyon - so I hope you enjoy seeing some other views of the beauty of Utah which are off the beaten path.
