The Argentines wanted to populate this territory so as to establish sovernigty in the mid 1800s. So they built a prison here. To make it pay for itself, they built a railway to the interior where there were stands of timber. The convicts cut the logs and loaded them on the train, then walked back to the prison. Today, the railway is a tourist train to the Terra del Fuego national park.
