The San Cristobal fort protected the approach to old San Juan from the land. The Morro fort protected the approach from the sea. Together, they were the 16th century equivalent of nuclear weapons - attacking them would be insane. Still, the British and the Dutch tried, but were not successful. The British captured the Morro fort and made their way to the other side of San Juan, only to be beaten back near the Cristobal fort.
