Mossberry (aka Crowberry)

Arctic Valley, near Anchorage, Alaska

"Empetrum nigrum"

These berries don't taste like much. They're rather bland, actually. But they're very easy to pick and apparently are often overlooked by the hoardes of berry pickers around here. They make excellent jelly with this recipe! Its a wonder more people don't focus on this abundant berry at Arctic Valley. Instead, people seem to prefer the bog blueberries that grow in the same area.

Lol I think it's weird to see the word "crowberries" and "mossberries" everyone I know, knows these berries as "blackberries" the opposite of a "blueberry" which is very delicious together or served separately, yummy in pies and fruit salids

They are very tasty depending in where you pick them!
High up ask a local and ask for mossberries! I grew up there and didn't
Know they were also called crowberries! If you go to the right spot you can
Pick them and there super tart and tasty! Lower elevation mossberries aren't
As flavorful! Just a heads up for going to AK, be yourself, be polite, and the locals
Will share there secrets! Also adding a little wiskey helps;) be a traveler not a tourist
And most places you go will be very rewarding!

Mine came out like syrup also, so we sell it at markets as syrup.....tastes great. Would really like to have jelly or jam though! ;)

Sorry your jelly came out like syrup (which can still be extra yummy as a pancake or ice cream topping!). I've had to follow this recipe "exactly" -- but when I do I've had great success with it -- it usually turns out one of the "best set" jellies of any of the Alaska berry jellies I've tried to make.

I followed the direction for the Mossberry Jelly and it is more like syrup. What am I doing wrong?
