I have one coming to our feeder every day. Not spooky at all as it lets me within a couple of feet and take all the pictures I want. I live on a ridge above the Kenai river and have lived here for 40 years but this is a first for this jay. The gray jays come for food when I whistle and this guy showed up with them last week and every day since. He is bigger but they interact well. Most likely a male and apparently a loner as he is the only one we see. Will be interesting to see if he stays all winter like the grays. The grays at our mine in Coldfoot live there year around with temps ranging down to minus 60. I am sure some don't survive but I am just as sure some do. Often when we return in early June I will whistle and within a short time there they are greeting us like old friends. Years ago we started giving some of them names to suit there personality traits and a few seem to recognize it and will land on my shoulder when I call. One we named bad hair could get us laughing on the worst of days. He would be waiting in the morning when I came to the cookhouse to make coffee and often fly in the door and sit on the table raising hell until I gave him a treat.

Are some Steller's Jays darker in color, than the one shown? It was a really dark, shiny blue (like a rooster's tail), at back of body with darker feathers blending from front to back.Crested like a Jay and had a Harsh cry, like a Jay, as it scolded me for being present.Fairly large, Jay shaped bird. Seen in Eagle River, AK 8.7.2014

Seen one of these on the Kenai River yesterday. Right above the point where it meets the Russian. Beautiful bird. I am from WV but my adult sons live here. It flew onto one of the fishing line recycle boxes and posed for some time as if waiting to be photographed. Beautiful bird and let me get within 3 to5 feet of it. I just had to research it a soon as I had the opportunity!

One flew onto our deck tonight at the bird bowl. I wasn't sure what it was, other than it was blue and had a distintive comb. Beautiful he was! Of course camera was in another room and I just knew if there was movement it would leave. Ate at the bowl for a good minute or two. So my search began for this bird - same as in your picture. I live in the Independence Park area and lived in Alaska for 40 some years and have never seen this bird. Gorgeous!
