At around 2 PM on Sunday, 7/30/06, I observed at least three and possibly more Cedar Waxwings along Ship Creek, just north of the dam at Elmendorf Fish Hatchery (just outside the Post Road entrance to Elmendorf AFB). The birds were vocalizing and flycatching across Ship Creek, viewable from the parking lot at the upper Salmon Viewing Area. Here are a few photos from that event.
Why are these birds called "cedar waxwing?" I just saw a series of bird pictures (Alaska) and wondered about the derivation of the various names? For instance - why "waxwing"?These birds are so beautiful, but I wonder about the various names.

Anchorage Cedar Waxwings
Lived in Fairbanks 50 years. Have enjoyed fall time viewings of Bohemian Waxwings. Watching groups in Spring and Fall clean out fruited ChokeCherry and or crab apple trees is a sight to enjoy.
I am 95++% certain I have been watching 2 Cedar Waxwings in Fairbanks Alaska last 2 nights. Hope to get better photo's to confirm for all. Bird appears pinch smaller than Bohemian, no orange under butt, and all other markings are CONSISTANT with cedar. Only 5% chance that summer plumage change is misleading me. I hear them again,,,
