It rained all the way on our returning hike. But our guide Furhana told us that a rainy day would increase the chance of seeing a kiwi. Sure enough, in about half way around 9:45am, we heard Bob called out "Kiwi!" - a kiwi just crossed the road behind 4 of us but in front of Bob and Evelyn. For the next few minutes, we were breathlessly watching this big brown bird (40cm, 2.5kg), from a few meters away, poking its long beak repeatedly into the ground while slowly moving along the trail. This is one of those dream finally come true moment after long expectation. As you may already know that kiwi only lives in New Zealand, and Stewart Island Brown Kiwi is the only kiwi active at day time.
