Most every midnight this first week of August, when the temperature has been above the mid-80s, I have found a cicada or two on the sidewalk while walking the dogs. Most are already in the process of emerging, but this one was still searching for a foothold and I was able to bring it back and put it on the bricks of our retaining wall to photograph from beginning to end. Being my first attempt, I was experimenting with lighting and camera angles to some degree.
The gallery, below, contains selected stills from the time-lapse animation and the lighting setup used for most of the shots. http://www.sprengels.com/old/Cicada/ 45-frame time-lapse animation, QuickTime or WindowsMedia. Each frame started as a RAW file that I straightened and cropped to make the field of view approximately the same, then used Photoshop's Fit Image to make them all 800x600. The uncompressed AVI was created in Corel/JASC Animation Studio 3, then converted to WMV with Windows Movie Maker, and MOV with QuickTime Pro using the H.264 codec new in version 7 available from: www.apple.com/quicktime/ |
