gallery: The Gokstad Ship
The Gokstad Ship is the largest of the three ships in the museum, and unlike the Oseberg the Gokstad is representative of the sea-going vessels the Vikings used during their raids on Europe. The ship is undecorated, but the sheer beauty of the hull shape is undeniable. Replicas of the Gokstad Ship have been built and have crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

This ship is in an excellent state of preservation, just like the Gokstad ship. Unlike the ocean-going Gokstad, the Oseberg is more of an inshore vessel, not built for voyages on the high seas. She is more in the nature of a royal yacht for pleasure cruising. The richly decorated panels on bow and stern are also indications of this.

Compared to the Gokstad and Oseberg ships, the Tune ship is a sorry sight. It is interesting nonetheless, as so much of the internal structure is plainly visible.
