My last city in India. People go here to gawk at Hindus bathing themselves in the Ganga, their holiest river, or so I think I know. It seems a particularly non-PC thing to do, but I suppose if they wanted to stop people from gawking, they could pull a Saudi Arabia and make Varanasi completely off-limits to non-Hindus, just as Mecca and Medina are for infidels.
Still, it's jolly good fun taking a boat ride and watching them bathe in this fetid, poisonous river. And the architecture of the ghats (the bathing stairs) and the palaces and temples that surround them is amazing. It's also a very interesting city to walk around. REmeinded me of Madurai, where I went last year to gawk at Hindus performing sacred rituals.
Should people gawk at people performing religious rituals? Please advise.
I never found out what this is. But it looked cool.
In one month in India in August, I got rained on once.

gawk? as with most things in india, your call, when i was in varanasi, hard not to snap away at people doing religious things, problem is not to get in their face with it, imho, and not of the cremation area, imho, what i don't like is tourists acting like the people are in a zoo, and seeing them as part of a show or something, if thats gawking, then no.
for example, yes EVERYone says the ganges is terrible here, but they also say it has healing properties, and of course its good to die here, so why not just comment more on the positive, though on the road its hard
